BSMMU Paediatric Nephrology

BSMMU — Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, now BMU, still known locally as PG Hospital — is one of the largest public hospitals in Bangladesh. I led the early build of the records platform for its paediatric nephrology department: indoor and outdoor patients, visit-by-visit entries, and disease tagging designed so the department could use its own caseload as a research corpus. It was primarily a 2018–2019 project, upgraded again in 2023–2024, and it is still actively run today. ELO is now working with them on a donations system as well.

Records that have to serve research

A teaching hospital department needs two things from its records at once: care for the patient in front of it, and a dataset it can ask questions of later. Paper does the first badly and the second not at all — a decade of paediatric nephrology cases is worthless as evidence if nobody can filter it by disease, symptom, or complaint.

So the platform was built around the entry and the tag rather than around the visit form: every patient entry carries the structure needed to find it again years later, across both indoor admissions and outpatient visits.

What it does

  • Patient and visit records. Create, read, update and delete over a patient register that spans indoor and outdoor care.
  • Disease and symptom tagging. Entries tagged and indexed so the register is filterable by disease, symptom, and complaint — the queries research actually starts from.
  • Dynamic visit tracking. A visit form that adapts to what is being recorded, paired with a timeline-based document viewer for the patient’s history.
  • Time-stamped change logging. Every change to a patient record logged with who and when — the baseline requirement before anyone trusts clinical data.
  • Indexed search. A searchable database over name, ID, contact, and clinical attributes, for a register that grows for years.

Six years of second rounds

The 2018–2019 build was the foundation; the 2023–2024 upgrade is the part that matters more. Systems inside public hospitals usually get abandoned rather than improved, and this one has instead kept earning further investment — including the donations system ELO is building with the department now.

No screenshots on this page, deliberately: the only interfaces that exist show real patient names and contact numbers, and a platform whose whole premise is careful handling of clinical records should not have those on a portfolio.

Dairyland Bangladesh — a dairy brand whose promise is that nothing was done to the milk — and East Bengal Closet, a fashion label that needed to look established from day one, are the two I point at most. Logo work is unforgiving in a way product design is not: there is no interaction to explain the idea, no second screen, no copy to lean on. Getting a business's whole character into one mark is the discipline that everything else I design is built on.
