OpenAI · Forward Deployed EngineeringOriginal job post

An engineering leader who ships frontier AI — and grows the people who ship it.

Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering is the role Fauzul has effectively been doing for a decade — leading customer-facing delivery teams through ambiguous, high-stakes deployments and owning the technical and business outcomes end to end. He co-founded , grew it to 22 engineers, moved it to distributed remote-first delivery, and coached and mentored people into strong next steps abroad (two alumni now lead at organisations in Norway, another is pursuing further studies in Canada on his recommendation, and a UX designer he trained in Germany is taking their next step). He's a player-coach — UX Engineer → Principal Staff SWE → Engineering Manager → CIO — who still ships: a Claude-powered natural-language CMS running in production, plus agentic 0→1 builds (, , ). He still ships fast, leads across design, product, engineering, deployment and strategy, and partners fluently with cross-functional teams and stakeholders (product, GTM, executives, client CTOs). He's also genuinely public-facing — technical webinars, engineering writing, hackathons, and teaching in public — leverage for OpenAI's wider developer community and for earning customer trust. Exactly the leader the Forward Deployed Engineering team needs to grow a durable field org in London.

Builds the systems — and grows the teams that ship them

I've effectively been a Forward Deployed Engineering manager for a decade — leading customer-facing teams through ambiguous deployments, owning the outcomes, growing the people, and still shipping myself.
Frontier AI, shipped

A team grown to 22 — and an LLM running in a client's production stack

Two sides of the same job. As a leader: I co-founded , grew it to 22 engineers, moved it to distributed remote-first delivery (+50% productivity, +100% satisfaction), and grew people into their next steps. As a player-coach who still ships fast: a Claude-powered natural-language CMS runs in production for a 26-year-old export house, turning plain English into model-authored PRs and automated deploys. Leading the team, partnering cross-functionally with product, GTM and executives, and setting the technical bar by example are the same act for me.

Built and scaled a customer-facing delivery org to 22, remote-first, and handed it mission-critical operations with absolute trust.

Grew people into their next step — two alumni now lead at organisations in Norway, another is pursuing further studies in Canada (on my recommendation), and a UX designer I trained in Germany is taking their next step, plus alumni at two leading local firms.

Codified leverage: component libraries, multi-tenant architecture and an OIDC/RBAC backbone every product ships on — plus public engineering writing, webinars and hackathons that create leverage for the wider developer community.

Still hands-on and cross-functional — ships fast across design, product and engineering (Claude CMS in production, agentic 0→1 builds: , , ) while partnering with product, GTM and executive stakeholders.

01

Leadership — ELO grown to 22, remote-first

Engineering Manager → CIO. +50% productivity / +100% satisfaction on the move to distributed delivery; coached people into strong next steps; mission-critical ops handed over with trust.

02

Player-coach — ships fast, hands-on

Still writes the code — a Claude-powered CMS in production, 0→1 shipped in a one-week sprint and at hackathons, across design, product and engineering. Sets the engineering and pace bar by example.

03

Public-facing — community & customer trust

Technical webinars, engineering writing, hackathons and teaching in public (906-day streak) — external leverage for the wider developer community and trust with the customers closest to the work.

02 — Role fit

Point by point

The role is Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering — leading FDEs through high-stakes, ambiguous customer deployments, owning technical and business outcomes end to end, and growing a durable team that helps OpenAI learn from the field. Here's how a decade of building, leading, coaching and shipping — across design, product, engineering, deployment and strategy — maps onto each point.

Strong fit

Lead and grow a team of Forward Deployed Engineers delivering production systems with frontier models — staffing and supporting field teams that scale without added complexity.

Evidence

Co-founded and grew it to 22 engineers, then moved it to distributed remote-first delivery — a customer-facing firm whose engineers ship into clients' production stacks across continents. As Engineering Manager (2022–2024) then CIO, defined how field teams are staffed and supported, building reusable frameworks and an OIDC/RBAC platform so the team scaled delivery without scaling complexity.

Strong fit

Own end-to-end delivery outcomes — technical and business value — through clarity, speed, tight coordination, and technical quality.

Evidence

Owns use cases from ambiguous brief → CI/CD pipeline → production, and owns the business outcome too: validated demand before over-building, delivered 4x faster time-to-market (75% reduction in cycle time) with GitHub Actions + AWS pipelines, and treated reliability and compliance (HIPAA, GDPR, OIDC/RBAC) as product surfaces. As a founder-CIO he's accountable for what ships and what it's worth, not just that it shipped.

Strong fit

Set a high bar for FDE performance and support each person's growth through direct, actionable feedback — elevating the team through clarity, not process.

Evidence

Coached and mentored people into strong next steps abroad and co-founded career-growth pathways — two alumni now lead at organisations in Norway, another is pursuing further studies in Canada on his recommendation, and a UX designer he trained and guided in Germany is taking their next step, alongside alumni at two leading local tech firms. Runs remote-first on clarity and trust rather than process overhead, and hands mission-critical operations to the people he's grown with absolute trust. CSPO; hiring and onboarding owned end to end.

Strong fit

8+ years of engineering or technical delivery experience, including 2+ years managing high-performing FDE or customer-facing engineers.

Evidence

9+ years building and delivering software, with a clear management arc: UX Engineer → Principal Staff SWE → Software Engineering Manager (Dec 2022 – Sept 2024) → CIO (Sept 2024 – present). The engineers he managed did exactly forward-deployed work — embedded with clients, shipping production software on their stacks — so 2+ years managing customer-facing delivery engineers is the core of his recent chapter, not an adjacent claim.

Strong fit

Codify what works into tools, playbooks, and roadmap inputs that create leverage for OpenAI and the wider developer community; translate field experience into sharp feedback for Product and Research.

Evidence

A systems-thinker about leverage: architected the component libraries, multi-tenant architecture and OIDC/RBAC backbone every product ships on, so the team scaled delivery from reusable building blocks rather than one-offs. Partners cross-functionally — engineers, product, GTM and executives — to turn field signal into roadmap inputs for Product and Research, and aims that same leverage at the wider developer community in public: engineering pattern papers (monorepo components; developer productivity), a technical webinar series, and building in public at hackathons.

Strong fit

Stay hands-on as a player-coach — write and review production-grade code across frontend and backend (JavaScript or Python) — with range across design, product, and engineering.

Evidence

Leads from the front and still writes the code: React/Next.js on Go, Node/TypeScript and Python, with a Claude-powered CMS running in a client's production stack. Rare full breadth — started as a UX Engineer (Figma, design systems), sets product strategy (market validation, 0→1), and architects the platform — so he can raise the bar by example across design, product and engineering, not just review.

Strong fit

Operate with urgency in ambiguous, evolving environments — notice early indicators, use judgement on what needs action, and build deep trust by modeling calm, focus and judgment when it matters most.

Evidence

A decade dropping into ambiguous enterprise environments across five verticals and multiple continents, leading diverse, distributed teams and diverse customers — health-tech, fintech, HR-tech, hospitality, export. Curious enough to live on the frontier, cautious enough to probe risk early and bake in safeguards; calm under pressure and candid about gaps — the temperament a field team trusts when stakes are high.

Strengths & honest gaps

Built a durable, scalable delivery team

Co-founded and scaled it to 22 engineers, moved it to distributed remote-first delivery (+50% productivity, +100% satisfaction), and progressed from Engineering Manager to CIO — then handed mission-critical, worldwide operations to the team with absolute trust. Building a field org that scales without scaling complexity is the exact mandate of this role.

A coach who grows people into their next step

Direct, actionable feedback, career-growth pathways, and clarity over process (CSPO, async-first): two alumni now lead at organisations in Norway, another is pursuing further studies in Canada on his recommendation, and a UX designer he trained and guided in Germany is taking their next step — international, durable mentorship, not a metric on a slide.

A player-coach who still ships — fast

Leads from the front and writes the code: React/Next.js on Go, Node/TypeScript and Python, with a Claude-powered CMS running in a client's production stack. Bias for fast, iterative product delivery — solo-built during the World's Largest Hackathon, shipped in a one-week sprint — so he sets the engineering and pace bar by example, not from a deck. Came up through design (UX Engineer, Figma) and product (0→1, market validation) too.

Cross-functional and stakeholder-fluent

Translating between engineers, product, GTM and executives is the founder-CIO's daily job. Has partnered directly with client CTOs and run delivery for stakeholders across five verticals (health-tech, fintech, HR-tech, hospitality, export) and many cultures — exactly the cross-functional coordination (Product, Research, Sales, GTM) and stakeholder trust an FDE manager lives in, and the range to translate field reality into sharp feedback for Product and Research.

Public-facing — built for community leverage and customer trust

Hosts technical webinars (a GitOps with Terraform series), writes widely (engineering pattern papers on Medium; a national newspaper op-ed), builds in public at hackathons, and teaches publicly with relentless consistency (a 906-day French streak as @FrenchwithFauzul). For a customer-facing field team that external presence is leverage — building trust with customers, representing the team well, and turning what the field learns into content the wider developer community can use.

Closing the gaps

Managing a Forward Deployed field org inside a frontier AI lab at OpenAI's scale (vs a founder-led firm of 22).

Ramp, not a gap

The leadership primitives transfer directly — staffing and growing customer-facing delivery teams, owning end-to-end outcomes, coaching people into bigger roles, and codifying what works. What's new is OpenAI's scale and the frontier-lab context; he closes that by listening first, learning the existing playbooks, and bringing a decade of deployment scar tissue rather than imposing a product engineering venture firm's process.

05 — Hard questions

Candid answers

Candid answers — why a founder and CIO wants the FDE-manager seat, the honest read on managing a product engineering venture firm team versus a frontier-lab field org, the management style (clarity over process), how he stays a player-coach, and shipping Claude rather than GPT. Ask the agent anything else.

Q01

You co-founded and run your own product engineering venture firm as CIO — why step into a Forward Deployed Engineering manager seat?

Because this is the part of leadership I love most, stripped of the agency overhead. As CIO my role drifted into running a client-services business; what lights me up is leading a delivery team in the room with customers — growing people, owning outcomes, and still shipping myself. A Manager, FDE seat at OpenAI is exactly that work, applied to frontier models, with the leverage of a world-class platform behind me. I'd rather build and grow that field team from the inside than keep running a product engineering venture firm from the outside.

Q02

You managed your own product engineering venture firm, not FDEs at a frontier lab. Why trust you to manage OpenAI's field team?

Fair — and I won't overstate it. But the engineers I managed did exactly forward-deployed work: embedded with clients, shipping production software on their stacks under real pressure. I grew that team to 22, moved it remote-first, and coached and mentored people into strong next steps abroad — the same primitives this role needs (staffing, growing people, owning end-to-end delivery, codifying what works). What's new is OpenAI's scale and the frontier-lab context, and I'd close that by listening and learning the existing playbooks first, not importing a product engineering venture firm's process. I bring a decade of deployment scar tissue most first-time lab managers don't have.

Q03

How would you describe your management style — and what does 'elevate through clarity, not process' mean to you?

Clarity, trust, and growth. I set a high, explicit bar and give direct, actionable feedback, then get out of people's way — I run remote-first on shared context and outcomes rather than ceremony, which is how we hit +50% productivity and +100% satisfaction when we went distributed. I coach deliberately: career-growth pathways, stretch ownership, and handing real responsibility early — which is why people I've grown have gone on to lead at organisations in Norway and take strong next steps abroad. Process exists to serve clarity; the moment it becomes the point, I cut it.

Q04

This role partners with Product, Research, Sales and GTM and is meant to create leverage for the wider developer community. How do you work cross-functionally and show up externally?

Translating across functions is the founder-CIO's daily job — I'm equally comfortable scoping with a customer's executives, aligning on a product roadmap, and pairing with an engineer on the hard part, and I've partnered directly with client CTOs to land delivery. On the external side I'm genuinely public-facing: I host technical webinars (a GitOps with Terraform series), publish engineering pattern papers and a national op-ed, build in public at hackathons, and teach publicly with relentless consistency (a 906-day French streak as @FrenchwithFauzul). For an FDE manager that presence is real leverage — it builds customer trust, represents the team well externally, and turns what the field learns into playbooks and content the wider developer community can actually use. Modern field leadership is part-engineer, part-communicator, and I've been doing both in public for years.

Q05

Can you stay a genuine player-coach — hands-on across design, product, and engineering — while leading a team?

It's how I've always worked. I came up as a UX Engineer, grew through Principal Staff SWE into management, and still ship — a Claude-powered natural-language CMS runs in production for a real client, and I build agentic products in public. I can sit with a customer to scope a use case, sketch the flow in Figma, write the tricky service in Go or Python, and reason about the business case — so I set the bar by example and earn the team's trust technically. The leadership doesn't replace the building; it multiplies it.

Q06

Your production AI work has been Claude-led, not GPT. Why are you the right person to lead an OpenAI field team?

I'll be honest rather than name-drop: what I've shipped has been Claude-led, and that integrity matters to me. But leading FDE work isn't about which model — it's about taking frontier models into the messy reality of enterprise and growing a team that does it reliably, then feeding what the field learns back to Research and Product. That skill is model-agnostic, and I've proven it: an LLM in a client's production stack, plus a decade of leading customer-facing delivery. I'm genuinely eager to go deep on OpenAI's stack, and I'd rather be the leader who's candid about where he's coming from and ramps visibly than one who oversells.

Q07

This role is hybrid in London (3 days/week) with travel up to 25%. Are you set up for that?

Yes — I'm intentional about basing this chapter in London (my sister is here and I've supported Arsenal since 2003, so it's a genuine, durable move), comfortable on a 3-day in-office cadence, and ready for the customer travel. I've led distributed teams and delivered for London, Zurich, Oslo and Sandnes clients for years, so balancing on-site team leadership with field travel is familiar. I relocate as soon as the UK Skilled Worker visa processes and start on local hours from day one.
